 In my mid-twenties, I was furious. I could suddenly see clearly all of the slights and abuses, all of the ways in which I and the women around me were gaslit, expected to pretzel ourselves into insane shapes to maintain men’s egos. I’d learned that the only way to get by is to be very tough and very funny, which was the fallback I’d become accustomed to: a murky mix of comedic inclination and self-betrayal. But then eventually the rage dropped away and something else lived in its place.

Another playwright told me once that, when Oedipus Rex was performed in the outdoor stages of ancient Greece, the play was timed such that just as Oedipus put out his own eyes, the sun would finish setting and the entire audience would be plunged into darkness. What is that if not beautiful? What is that if not pure access to truth through the frame of an illusion?
